What is Detox?

Detoxification is the process of ridding the body of harmful toxins and substances.[1] If you’ve developed a physical or psychological dependence on alcohol, prescription medications, or illicit substances, there may be uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms during this time.

Detox treatment helps alleviate and manage symptoms as your body wipes the slate clean. With medical oversight and support, negative reactions can be mitigated, and the overall experience will be more positive. This process lays the foundation for success in ongoing treatment.

Substances that can be addressed in detox include:

  • Crack
  • Methamphetamine
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Kratom
  • Club Drugs
  • Heroin
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Fentanyl
  • Pain Killers
  • Stimulants
  • Marijuana
  • Barbiturate
  • Suboxone
  • Adderall
  • Sleeping Pills
  • Inhalants
  • Cocaine
  • Alcoholism

Inpatient Detox vs. Outpatient Detox

Both treatment options can be successfully completed and have been scientifically determined to offer similar outcomes.[2] The severity of substance use, medical history, co-occurring disorders, cost and insurance, and lifestyle needs will determine which level of care is best for you.

In-patient detox is a medically monitored environment with 24/7 support and unrestricted access to care. While this option isn’t possible for everyone, either due to a slightly higher cost or significant time commitment, it allows for a completely focused environment where you can dedicate all your energy to recovering.

Treatment begins as soon as you check into the facility. The medication-assisted inpatient treatment process will help to reduce the effects of withdrawal and allow you to experience a greater degree of comfort during detoxification.

Common Withdrawal Symptoms During Detox

Withdrawal symptoms vary depending on the substance, the last use, and dosage amounts. The following are common symptoms that are often associated with several substances,  including benzodiazepines, alcohol, opioids, inhalants, stimulants, and cannabis:[3]

  • Anxiousness
  • Insomnia
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Restlessness, agitation, and irritability
  • Tension and muscle aches
  • Flu-like symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, etc.)
  • Depression
  • Body shakes or tremors
